Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro)
Infectious bursal disease is a common highly contagious disease that targets the bursa, which is a part of the immune system in the young chicken.
Depending on the antibody status of the chicken and the level of challenge, the clinical effects of the infectious bursal disease are seen in two main ways and with both, the earlier the infection occurs the more severe are the clinical effects.
- In fully susceptible chickens 100% of the chickens may be affected and mortality varies (up to 30%), beginning on the third day after infection and receding after seven days. The affected chickens peck at their vents, suffer from diarrhoea and dehydration and are depressed. The bursa of the affected chicken swells and then reduces in size over time. The clinical effects of the disease are most pronounced in chickens between 3 to 6 weeks of age.
- There is a severe prolonged immunosuppression in chickens affected early in their life. These chickens are prone to other diseases e.g. inclusion body hepatitis and E. coli as well as vaccination failures.
There is no treatment for this disease. Prevention through good hygiene and vaccination is required. Bursine-2 further aids the establishment of immunity and during this time the chickens should not be placed into high challenge situations.
For vaccination of healthy chickens as an aid in the prevention of disease caused by infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus. The vaccine contains intermediate live infectious bursal disease virus, Lukert strain. A mild vaccine is usually given first at one day of age. This is followed by Bursine-2 at 12 to 21 days, which will stimulate immunity without a negative effect on the bursa and in the presence of declining levels of maternal antibodies.
Dosage and Administration
Chickens: Vaccinate chickens via the drinking water at 7 days of age or older.
Breeders: When used as a primer for an inactivated IBD vaccine, Bursine-2 should be administered via the drinking water 6 to 8 weeks prior to administration of the inactivated vaccine.
Bursine-2 is for drinking water administration.
Caution
Use only on premises with a history of infectious bursal disease.
The manufacturer recommends that chickens are vaccinated at least 21 days prior to slaughter. Use required doses of vaccine when first opened and dispose of vaccine container and all unused contents in an approved manner. S ee full directions on insert.
